What to Do If You Run Out of Heating Oil

By Prestige Oil Team

Running out of heating oil is stressful but rarely a disaster. The burner has shut down safely, the house will cool slowly, and you have time to make smart decisions. Here is the order to do things in.

Step 1: Confirm you are actually out

Before assuming the worst, check the tank gauge and, if you can, listen near the burner. A tripped reset switch, a clogged filter, or a thermostat issue can mimic an out-of-oil situation. If the gauge is pinned at E and the burner won't fire, you are most likely out.

Step 2: Protect the house

Set your thermostat to a normal setting so the burner will fire as soon as fuel returns. Close interior doors to slow heat loss between rooms. If outdoor temperatures are well below freezing and the house is going to be without heat for several hours, open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to keep pipes warmer.

If you have a wood stove or a backup electric heater, use it for one room rather than trying to heat the whole house.

Step 3: Call for emergency delivery

Turn your thermostat down to conserve the remaining heat in the house, then call Prestige Oil for emergency delivery.

Mention clearly that you are out of oil — that usually changes the scheduling priority. You can also order online and leave a note that the tank is empty, but if you are very low or out, call us at (914) 483-6860 and we will do our best to place you on the earliest available route.

Step 4: Leave burner work to a professional

Do not try to restart or prime the burner yourself, and do not add any other fuel to the tank. If the burner needs restarting or priming after the delivery, contact a licensed oil burner technician.

If you smell fuel, see smoke, or notice any sign of fire, leave the house immediately and call 911. Do not re-enter until emergency responders tell you it is safe.

Step 5: Prevent the next one

Set a recurring calendar reminder to physically look at the tank gauge every couple of weeks during heating season. Order when the gauge sits between ½ and ¼. If you tend to forget, a friend, neighbor, or family member who comes over regularly is a good backup.

If you are out and need oil today across Putnam or northern Westchester, call us — do not just place the order silently. We will tell you honestly whether we can fit you in.
