The cushion that matters
For a standard 275-gallon home tank, ordering when the gauge is between ½ and ¼ tank is the sweet spot. You still have several weeks of normal use in the tank, but there is enough room for a meaningful delivery without overfilling.
Anything below ¼ tank in the dead of winter is cutting it close. Cold-weather usage can be twice the rate of milder months, and a single sub-zero week can move the gauge a lot faster than people expect.
Watching the posted price
Because our price per gallon moves with the market, the rate posted on the homepage on any given day is not always the rate it will be tomorrow. Customers who watch the homepage and place an order on a day the rate looks favorable lock in that exact price — even if the price climbs later in the week.

The Putnam County rhythm
Heating oil demand in Putnam County is, unsurprisingly, seasonal. October through March is the busy stretch. The first real cold snap of the year usually triggers a surge of orders, and the busiest weeks tend to be the days after Thanksgiving, the week after Christmas, and the first sustained sub-20° stretch in January.
Ordering before those rushes — not during — means a calmer delivery window and a tighter scheduling promise.
Standing rules of thumb
Plan on roughly one fill every 4 to 8 weeks during heating season for an average home with a 275-gallon tank. Larger or poorly insulated homes will be at the shorter end of that range. Mild stretches in November or March may stretch it longer.
If you travel a lot or have a second home in the area, set a reminder for mid-October to check the tank before the season starts. A pre-season top-off avoids most surprises.
